I read a technical description of how it's done, don't recall where. It's fairly sophisticated having to do with identifying the electrical field (?) in the original well. I believe the bit has to be removed for the sensing instruments to be deployed or work, and then drilling resumes with whatever adjustments. It's not GPS.
