it turns out that I kinda knew that stuff. But you miss the point of the original argument. You've made it clear that southern democrats definitely did their best to oppress blacks. But you are making the point that it was the people in power who were doing it, not all white people. There were white people who were actively working to stop the oppression.

If you listen to the New Black Panthers and the NAACP and various members of the current administration, white people are still oppressing the minorities.

Since about 1965, those things that you listed were pretty much eliminated. That means that blacks and every other minority has had the same voting rights and abilities that everyone else has. And as you said, we are a representative republic. Therefore, in the past 45 years there is no argument that minorities are not part of that representative republic. Therefore, by your argument, if minorities are still being oppressed and by virtue of the fact that we are a representative republic they are part of the oppressive powers.

To be clear, my point is that because the people in power during much of the history of the United States are/were white, does not mean that all whites are oppressors. Here is what I originally posted:

"In fact, one of the more racists beliefs in our society is that whites oppressed and are still oppressing blacks and other minorities. Where certainly a small segment of the white population did oppress blacks and some still may, most whites are just trying to put a roof over their heads and feed their families and don't have the time, inclination or power to oppress anyone."
