MEDWAY (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - It’s controversial to begin with - schools sending home letters with “fat” reports of students.

One such letter says one 9-year-old is overweight, something that athletic Medway student is certainly not. Her parents say sending body mass index reports home to kids is just asking for problems.

Shelby Sumner, 9, had to undergo a body mass index (BMI) screening at Memorial Elementary School.

When her mother, Lori-Ann Sumner, found her daughter's body mass index results in her backpack, she was outraged.

The school is required to calculate each BMI to determine healthy proportions.

Shelby weighs about 90 pounds and is just over 4 feet, 9 inches tall. She is an active gymnast.

While Sumner says her daughter is handling it well, she’s worried about the impact the letters will have on children who are more sensitive.
