Changes in income can be completely misleading without looking at where the changes are coming from.

If I see cap gains taxes going up next year and I decide to sell to pay taxes this year, my income could go up by 300%. Is that meaningful? Certainly not in comparing different income groups.

Or maybe an increase of several million minimum wage illegals will skew the lower end down.
