But unlike the tooth fairy, many adults did believe and/or advance the claim that if we raised social security taxes the foreseeable problems with social security would be largely taken care of.

The other point is that the problems with social security are not just an issue of making sure the programs tax brings in as much as the programs spending. Even if we can get that to be a durable situation the high and increasing spending is still a very large problem.
