This issue is not whether there are observed changes in ice coverage, water temperature, etc. The climate of the earth has always been changing. Nothing is static, and where glaciers are retreating for one episode of time, they have advanced in other periods. Perhaps it is a big deal now because people have begun to build an awareness of our surroundings, and have come to understand that human activity is creating changes in our environment. Unfortunately this awareness has now led to a hyper-sensativity of all things environmental and a mass hysteria to 'do something about the problems'. Somehow people came to believe that we are master of all things in our universe, and that we can change the very climate of our planet. This is nonsense. There are far too many people who automatically accept that if we have evidence of climate change, that it automatically validates the global warming theories, and that it entirely due to the influence of people. The reason the climategate disclosure was so damning is because it proved you have scientists that have conspired to alter the evidence such that it builds a stronger case for their propaganda. By 'hiding the decline' one can make a far stronger case that something is amiss because it suggests that the climate variation today is far stronger than any other time in history. This then generates a sense of urgency and also undermines the fact that climate change is part of the normal functioning of our planet. All of the clueless and gullible people who have been mobilized by this scam are now activists to promote it. In a democratic society, if you can fool enough people to get them to behave exactly as you want them to, then you will see your agenda supported regardless of whether it has any merit whatsoever. And that is exactly what we are witnessing in real time. Show me all of the melting glaciers you wish, and that does not provide a shred of evidence that people are the cause, or that by radically altering our behaviour we will be able to change things in the future. cheers! mike
