Mr Najmul H. Siddiqui reports
Tri-Vision Electronics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tri-Vision International, has
signed a joint development agreement with Samsung Electronics to build the first
V-chip enabled television set.
Samsung will join Tri-Vision Electronics to create a prototype TV set which
incorporates the V-chip technology. The V-chip enables parents to control the
quality and content of television programs viewed in the home.
Based in Korea, Samsung is a leader in the introduction of advanced technologies
in the global electronics industry selling more than 8,000,000 television sets per
year.
As part of the joint development agreement, engineers from Samsung are
expected to visit Tri-Vision's headquarters in Toronto, Ontario, in November to
work with the company's product development team. This new V-chip equipped
television is targeted to be ready by January 1998.
Director of Samsung's research and development team, visual media, multimedia
business, Mr Chunsoo Kim, signed the agreement to develop the prototype
television set. Reinforcing the strength of the intellectual property held by
Tri-Vision, Samsung was particularly interested in the novel feature of Tri-Vision's
technology which is able to cope with multiple and changing television content
classifications systems.
In addition to this joint development agreement, Tri-Vision is in the midst of
establishing licencing agreements with TV manufacturers for the incorporation of
its V-chip technology into new television sets.
