"We don't need to make an either/or decision. Owning 80% of the PLD market with shares of both ALTR and XLNX is a no-brainer!"

They were both too over valued for me until the tech bear market. I started to accumulate ALTR in 2004 using profits taken on stock I bought in 2002 with a break-even cost of $16.25 now after one profit taking and subsequent repurchase at $16.50. (LRCX, UTEK and CACS were huge winners for me buying some more in 2002 and selling the shares in 2004 that I used to accumulate ALTR)

So far, it seems to have been the right choice. Going forward, you might be right that equal in both is the way to go...

Would you sell AMAT, pay huge taxes (but less now under the Bush plan than next yr under Obama plan) then use the money to buy XLNX if you were me?
