Dan,

Unshielded twisted pair cableing specs are as follows: category 3- rated to
16mbps, category 4- rated to 20 mbps, and category 5 rated to 100mbps as
stated by Telecommuncications Industry Association/Electronics Industries
Association 568A statndard. So it appears that gig enet will have to run on
fiber. As for the present installed base cat 3 makes up the largest share as
most older buildings are wired cat 3. Cat 5 is generally being pulled in all
new cable runs (in older buildings) and prewired in all new buildings. Cat 5
got off to a slow start due to it's initial high cost and unavailability.

Hope this helps. Have a good one. EZ
