Well, this time around, I'm afraid secession is a matter of weeks or months --Flemish secession, that is. Flemish secessionists scooped 45% of the votes in the June 13th poll: NVA scored a whopping 30%, Vlaams Belang 12% and LDD (Lijst Dedecker) another 3%. Somehow, Belgium's institutional crisis reflects that of the European Union itself: if the latter has troubles, so does Belgium... like geopolitical twins. I guess the endgame for Belgium will be a French Wallonia alongside a Dutch Flanders. That is, France will annex Wallonia while Flanders will join the Netherlands --with two little provisos regarding the German-speaking cantons between Liège and Verviers, and the capital Brussels, a French-speaking enclave in Flanders. The latter will either end up as a Flemish Jerusalem --and, ultimately, a Dutch city-- or as "Brussels EC"... like Washington DC --a "European District". German-speaking cantons, on the other hand, will likely plebiscit their annexation to Germany --as a 17th Land... After all, they were part of Germany until 1918.
