I would not be surprised at any of those possibilities. Any time an individual, or government or corporation sees an edge, they are going to take it. It would be extremely hard to prove,because there are so many factors involved in market action. For example in July of last year stock market threads were buzzing with the ominous looking head and shoulders that was forming. Even grizzled old Don Worden, in my opinion, the dean of technical analysts, started tracking and commenting on the head and shoulders. Then, the market just took off and began a huge rally that persisted well into this year. But the likely reason was July earnings, which turned out to be 'better than expected.'
It is possible that very same thing is happening this year. Time will tell.
I daytrade the eminis, and watch market action up close and personal every day. My pet theory is that a group of guys from market maker trading desks get together for breakfast now and then and plot their strategy to move the markets during volume lulls. It would be very hard to prove this, but based on some of the shenanigans one sees on real time charts, it is likely.
However, I think my theory may be outdated. Now these guys could use real time online communications to exchange computer codes or specific moves to create profitable churn by tweaking their high frequency trading algorithms. If it is possible for them to do it, they probably are doing it.
