All I know is that when I left the Palo Alto VA in '86, I was making 37K for running the RT Dept. The next lowest salary in our 11 or so community of chiefs was making 42K. Most were over 50K. I think the guy at Stanfurd was around 100K. Staff therapists at other hospitals were making as much as I was, and I was 3 grades higher than anybody on my staff, so their pay sucked. And, given that I was as high as you could go in that job, with special rates for the high cost of living in the Bay Area, I was prolly the highest paid chief therapist in the entire VA.
The bennies were pretty much par for the course. Maybe a week more vacation a bit quicker than most. Health insurance was the public option plan whatdotheycallit, panel? in the HC bill. Same plan as Congress. Can't remember what I had to pay, but it was the first hospital I worked at where I did have to pay part of the cost. Don't recall retirement was any better than anywhere else. Not as good, actually, cuz everybody else has SS + a retirement plan. Anyway, since a long time ago, all new employees come under SS.
