"Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state." The Greeks did just ok in WWII. They beat off the early attack by the Italians but lost a whole lot when, a year later, the Germans invaded Crete with the first paratrooper led invasion. The German paratroopers were able to secure an airfield quickly and immediately flooded the island with reinforcements. I've visited some of those battlefields during a one month TDY to Chania and Souda Bay, Crete The Roman Empire fell apart. Someone wrote a lengthy book about that.
