However, Cohen's description of Jewish gangsters ignores that they were criminals who made their money by extorting and exploiting other Jews, including trafficking in Jewish women, and were generally considered a scourge within the community. The Yiddish press and literature of the 1920s and 30s was resolute in its condemnation of Jewish mobsters.
