Wiki has an article about medical studies with regard to low carb diets. It seems that the medical establishment" is actually working pretty hard at trying to figure out what different types of diets do to people.... A review of those Wiki summaries generally shows that - for the moment - those diets are seen as promising, with more research needed. I doubt that the "establishment" is trying to blackball them in any way "a priori". It does appear that such diets may be particularly promising for people with metabolic syndrome and NIDDM... but, again, it's in the early stages.

Intelligent and observant early adopters quite likely may prove to be right, but it appears that there is not enough basis, so far, for wholesale changes.
