Noisy Home Sales Data Offer Little Direction

2:44 (Dow Jones) When digesting the new home sales report, keep in mind the data point is notoriously noisy, Barry Ritholtz writes at The Big Picture. June's 24% monthly increase comes on the heels of May's 33% drop. "Ignore the swings, look at the moving average to smooth out the volatility," Ritholtz says. He also looks at a study his firm conducted in 2005 in which it analyzed this data point's volatility. The conclusion: "Anytime you see a big gain or drop in this data series, you should expect a reversal the following month." Dow up 52. (steven.russolillo@dowjones.com)
