Fla. church to host a 'Burn a Koran Day' on Sept. 11

The Dove World Outreach Center, a non-denominational church founded in Gainesville, Fla., in 1986, has outlined its plans on its website and Facebook page.

It says the burnings will be held on church grounds "in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!" The church sells "Islam is of the Devil" T-shirts.

In response, The Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling on American Muslims to host educational "Share the Koran" Ramadan fast-breaking dinners at which copies of Islam's holy text will be distributed to neighbors, public and law enforcement officials and journalists, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Religion News Service quotes Outreach Center senior Pastor Terry Jones as saying the Facebook response has prompted people to mail Korans to the church to burn.

Jones, according to the RNS, says organizers got the idea, in part, from another Facebook page campaign called "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day."

That was started in reaction to threats against cartoonists and artists drawing images of the prophet Mohammed, which is forbidden in Islam.
