Heard on CNBC this morning. Oracle is making a deal
with a "Major Telco" to distribute Oracle NCs FREE to
those who agree to sign up for internet access. It's
like those deals where the cellular phone is free if
you sign up with a cellular carrier. The model is the
old Gillete - Give away the razor and sell the blades.
A few problems - If I have a PC I don't need this.
If I don't I can only use the box with the phone service.
I don't know if this will catch on with the general public.
I'm not a marketing guru but my guess is that if someone
doesn;t have a first PC by this time, they are either
uninterested, scared of computers or poor. These three
catagories strike me a nightmarishly difficult to coax
into extensive online usage. But it also indicates that
the only way oracle can get any mass market for its product
is to find a way to give it away free. Maybe I'm wrong but
this has the smell of a debacle about 15 months from now.
