A surfeit of modems in the channel may indeed be a problem, but not the public's frustration with connect speed. When I had a 28.8 modem, I could seldom connect (with Sprint) at that speed. It was always 24 or 26. Most people with x2 are connecting at somewhere between 40-50, or almost twice as fast as previously. I have a cable modem now and wouldn't give it up unless I go broke (it's $40 a month) but even it gets a hiccup now and then.
