The MIPS ABI Group went further than that in some ways.
The ABI defines a common binary interface for several MIPS RISC UNIX
OSs, including Control Data, NEC, Pyramid, Siemens, Sony, Tandem,
and SGI.

Prorams that are MIPS ABI compliant can run on several platforms
without recompilation.
