Carl, how many people do you know right now that want to work, but can't find a job? I'm just curious if you know of any. I personally don't know a single person in this situation. I don't know many "middle managers" though. Perhaps a career change is in order if there is a glut of middle managers. Perhaps these managers forgot to get a good education? I just read that MBA graduates right now are having to fight off recruiters. They are being wined and dined by recruiters, with graduates winding up with 3-5 jobs offers to pick from. The job market has always been this way; shortages and gluts in this and that profession. About 15 years ago there was a glut of metal machinists and a shortage of computer programmers. A few short years later there was glut of programmers. For the last several years there has been a shortage of metal machinists. Right now a shortage of geologists. A few years ago a shortage of dental hygienists.

BTW, re those Engineering VPs: There's always people in transition. I remember reading at one time that, on average, person these days goes through five major career changes in their working life.

If those Engineering VPs do get their first consulting contract, they may find that they love being self-employed so much that they'll never go back to a regular job.
