A good article, which should provide much meat for discussion on a thread like this, especially the concluding challenge.

"So at this point we would like to invite the “creationists” to come out and provide their evidence for the current diversity and complexity of life on earth. Hopefully they will provide testable proofs and not throw scripture quotations in our face or threaten us with eternal burning in hellfire or eating of five fishes by 2000 people based on the miraculous sharing power of some zombie who has only 23 chromosomes because he did not have an earthly male parent."

His treatment of purpose is also worthy of comment:

"Another criticism is that evolution suggests humans have no purpose or the universe itself has no purpose. The claim is made that if that is the case then life itself is meaningless Well, actually that is the case, and there is nothing wrong with it. Nature is in indifferent. "

It may be appropriate to suggest evolution and nature in general is indifferent but that does not ultimately translate to 'humans have no purpose.' Purpose is real and humans do have purpose embedded in consciousness. We get into conflict over this idea of 'special purpose' probably because we try to impose something 'special' onto others. Purpose, however, is implicit in experience and a fundamental aspect of growth.
