Diddy Calls Martin Bashir 'Racist'
Diddy is blasting journalist Martin Bashir, accusing him of asking racist questions during an interview last month. In the interview, which aired on the nightly news program 'Nightline,' Bashir questioned the hip-hop mogul's decision to gift his 16-year-old son with a Mercedes Maybach, which is worth over $300,000.
In the August/September issue of 'Vibe' magazine--in which Diddy graces the cover, alongside Dirty Money singers Dawn Richard and Kalenna Harper, Cassie, Rick Ross, Janelle Monae and Red Cafe--the 40-year-old broke down his problem with the veteran journalist. "The whole thing about giving a Maybach to my son, that's really like a racist question," Diddy told the magazine. "You don't ask white people what they buy their kids. And they buy 'em Porsches and convertible Bentleys, and it ain't no question."
The head of Bad Boy Records felt offended by Bashir's approach to the interview. "It's really a racist question and put things back in perspective with money and the way that people still look at you," Diddy said. "And I'm not saying that consciously he's a racist. But he probably don't even realize that he would not ask Steve Jobs that. He would be like Steve Jobs has that money and that's the gift his kid is supposed to get."
During the interview, Diddy was noticeably agitated with Bashir's inquiries, making for a very awkward exchange. "There were times in the interview when I had to give him an ultimatum," he revealed. "The questions weren't being handled the right way. In hindsight, when I saw him, I shouldn't [have] done the interview because I know the style of interview that he does," he explained.
Bashir has a reputation for asking controversial questions, and angering celebs. He famously interviewed Michael Jackson for the 2003 documentary 'Living With Michael Jackson,' in which he asked the late King of Pop questions that did not sit well with the superstar. Jackson later publicly lauded Bashir for his interview techniques as well as his portrayal in the television special.
