Charles, Among other things I design network systems for brokerages. Their focus is on absolute minimums for latency and jitter. This gets extremely anal - some of the colo's in NY are taken to the level of having all the cabling the same length to equalize inter and intra rack latency. We have done testing with the brokerages on various routing and switching platforms to track port to port and card to card latency. A brokerage will then know which of the exchange feed ports provides the best feed and will trade algorithmically on that port/card/feed combo. VOIP and Video over IP require low, consistent latency with low jitter. Gaming requirements are best served by VOIP type specs, but the game cloud providers are getting smarter. The new Starcraft2 launch features putting gamers together based on skill, lag (what they call latency/jitter) and typing ability.
