If you find you can do a job with one person, why would you hire 2 to do it? It sucks, but that's capitalism. I'm in the process of running the outsourcing project for a pretty large company right now. We reduced our IT department by 50% of full time employees. Everyone said it would be a disaster, but we haven't had that many complaints so far. It's not that the Indians we are outsourcing to are anywhere near as competent as the people we let go. It's that we had vastly more IT people than we actually needed. Outsourcing just provides the cover to do the right thing from a profit maximizing perspective. I suspect most industries are finding themselves in similar circumstances. It's pretty hard to do the right thing with regard to employee numbers, especially since most middle managers are rewarded for building their empires (hey, traditionally its been the best way to climb the ladder and show your importance).
