Re:"Like I said - all technology has a dark side."

And the bright side of HFT is ...? The value-added proposition is ...?

Understood, if you're simply stating "I like HFT", fine. If you're making a reasoned argument that's something different.

What's the downside of radio?

What's the downside of Salk vaccine? It makes a tremendous contribution to the health and welfare of our society. We all understand the downside of nuclear energy, but we also see what we get for the tradeoff: power, heat, light. We have a choice; we're not obligated to accept any practice using any technology if the costs exceed the benefits.

Is HFT so valuable that we should tolerate its abuses, and the extraction of tens of billions of dollars from the trading process? What's the multiplier that returns this money to the economic virtuous circle, in many more billions?

Or is it simply more financial sector rent-seeking with no economic benefit? Please explain. What value, societal gains and economic benefits justify HFT's "dark side"?
