Its not things. Its your time preference vs the preferences of the people depending on the freight train you complained about. Freight trains serve PEOPLE too, whether or not passengers are riding on them.

trains are more fuel efficient than planes and cars.

Maybe not for passenger rail. For this to be true, the trains would need to be pretty full on all their runs and I doubt they ever will be except on commuter lines. It probably is more fuel efficient for me to drive a car to say, Denver, than to ride with 3 or 4 other folks in a big rail car there.
