In Denmark, that would be perceived as a huge violation of our individual freedom, and as an offense to tax payers

It's illegal to drink in the streets just about everywhere In the US. New Orleans stands out as one of the few places where you can. It's part of the tourist draw.

The direction from which you come at something, as I've posted before, makes a lot of difference. A lot of "sins" involving drinking and sex were made illegal a long time ago. The US has had periods of religious revivalism. Prohibition was effected a century ago. A lot of those sin laws are still on the books although mostly not enforced. Fornication is a felony in most jurisdictions. (I was actually on a jury once for a case of sodomy.) I don't think they would pass now because enough folks differentiate between sin and crime, but once on the books, laws are hard to rescind. If a politician comes out for doing so, he would be labeled as being in favor of drinking. It's just not worth making the effort to change. There are a lot of higher priorities.
