CAN do that would be of use to their neighbors and work up a barter system.

It is simple to do.

We live in a rural NC community. Those with things to sell are just as happy to trade as get cash. Bartering (both formal and informal) is a part of daily life here. Yesterday, when asked, I traded a ride to town for watermelons, then gave all but 1/2 of one melon to Montagnard refugee families. I would have done the ride for free, but this old WWII Vet wanted to trade something.

The smallest lot in our neighborhood is 5 acres and just about everyone has a large garden, and/or fruit trees, honey bees, etc.. Free sharing of garden excess with neighbors is routine.

So is 24/7 mutual security. Everyone pays attention. Our neighborhood is probably one of the most heavily armed in the country. I have a practise shooting area (berm) behind the house as do several neighbors.

Just about every household has a pickup truck and flies the American flag. I luv it all even the sound of practise gun fire.
