I used to like posting to people who had different ideologies, but I found it provoked people to rather violent hate. I don't hate anyone, but I found that many of the folks on the other side were quite...obsessively hateful. Not only would they hate, but they'd follow you around to do it.
So I get my divergent opinions from other sources- I read them in opinions pieces and in right wing publication. I don't want to converse with anyone who is going to turn in to a spittle dripping, name calling stalker- plus the published stuff is edited, so it's a lot less stupid than the stuff on SI (at least the opinion stuff). Not my cup of tea to be around aggressive people who are in to pissing matches on ideology. And really, who changes their mind? We all are old enough that we know the other side's opinions, and we understand the basis for their opinions. We believe what we believe because it meshes best with our temperament, our education and the lifestyle we enjoy. I am here to enjoy myself, relax, and meet people I genuinely like. I don't find that boring, and I like it that I, for the most part, agree with the people I like. For me, that's what is best about life. I find people I treasure (as I treasure you, Suma) and I avoid the negative. That's why I have never really followed people around. The people I care about are where I post. I don't need to follow negativity. Have never understood the people who hate, and then follow that hate around.
