AY,

I'm not aware of anyway to purchase bullion with 401 type funds. That does not mean there is not a way, but rather I'm not aware of it.

I plan to put those "trapped" funds in miners, but quality majors, mids, and a junior or two. The goal for those funds is less speculative and more protective of purchasing power. If and when we get the phase three of the bulls, I think there will be plenty of speculative return, but that interim period could be a rough ride. Zero leverage/slippage, of course, for this type of account, as my ability to add funds for a buy down is severely constrained relative to the account size and the allowable annual contribution. I don't even think you can use margin in my 401K account with Ameritrade, so someone has protected me from me <g>
