I have never seen concrete supporting pillars like the ones under the new bridge in your photo.

1) Is this design to reduce failure in earthquakes ?

2) Is the design done this way to allow smaller batches of concrete to be pored into a smaller slip form ? Might be a good technique if you are a long way from the concrete plant. The op of the last form spreads out to provide a wide platform and mechanical stability for the next form, which might be pored days later, due to variable concrete supply.

3) Or is it just ribbed for pleasure ?
