Glenn Beck is going to get somebody killed, said Eric Boehlert. Every day, Beck tells his Fox News audience of millions that they have to do something now, or a “nefarious cabal” of Marxist/fascists led by Barack Obama will abolish the Constitution, seize people’s guns, and transfer white people’s wealth to blacks and Hispanics. Recently, we witnessed the most direct link yet between this kind of irresponsible rhetoric and violence.
Byron Williams, a “government-hating, gun-toting nut” who watched a lot of cable TV, stocked a pickup truck with weapons and set out to massacre employees at the Tides Foundation in San Francisco. Why did he target this small, obscure nonprofit? Beck has attacked the Tides on his program 29 times, portraying the group as “a central player” in the left-wing conspiracy. On his way to his killing spree, Williams was stopped for drunken driving, and wounded two California cops in a wild shootout.
Unfortunately, Williams wasn’t the first nut provoked into taking up arms, and he won’t be the last. When Beck—and his fellow radicals on Fox and talk radio—talk about left-wing “coups” and guns and revolution, they aren’t engaging in mere partisanship. They’re inciting murder. |
