Your key words are "when done appropriately".. And most times the info is useful, even critical but when docs have equipment at their disposal they use as it often as possible, for profit. Kinda substitutes for office visits they can't squeeze into their schedules.. Docs in med grps must generate a certain amount of revenue or they're in trouble.

Dentists are beautiful in their business practices....at your six month check his DA will not only clean your teeth but will always take X-rays (unless you say no), and scan your mouth for potential work for the dentist. A recent dentist we had we thought was excellent..good skills and good personality, but a master salesman. He was quite familiar with the dental insurance plans of all the locals and in my case knew I had an annual maximum....for us he would send all a letter reminding us we had money still left and suggested we get in there and something done. His best gig was the sudden use of "onlays" for almost all routine restoration work instead of filling the tooth as was always done....he always had a reason for the onlay. The kicker...he charged as much as he did for a crown which covers the whole tooth...onlays only cover the top of a tooth... He charged $40 for a fluoride rinse with less than an ounce of solution....I checked dental suppliers and learned that the fluoride solution cost him $40 a gallon. The guy drove a top of the line Mercedes and moved south a couple of years ago..

Last night on 60 Minutes they ran segment on terminally ill patients and said that Medicare spends 59 or 69 billion dollars a year for patients in the last 2 months of their lives. They showed how they inform a patient and his family what the options are and gently suggest that maybe the patient would not want to finish his life being kept alive by extraordinary means. I got the impression that most choose to hang on.. They also said the Medicare does not deny any treatment or test they want if it is medically approved by the FDA for that purpose..
