I2, you are right. And I think you put it much better, in fact!

However, I have a paper with me here titled, "What Long-Run Returns can Investors Expect from the Stock Market?" by John E. Golob and David G. Bishop. It is a paper published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Anyway, the authors quote a recent Louis Harris and Associates poll of over 1,000 mutual fund investors wherein a surprising 75% predicted that returns in the next decade will either equal or exceed the returns in the past decade!

Also, I recently read a comment from somebody that people opening mutual fund accounts are by and large, clueless. And when asked questions, they give answers like, "Yes, give me the fund that was up 23% last year"! (must have probably heard about the Index 500 fund from Vanguard).

Montgomery might have screwed up this survey, but on the other hand, I don't think that the average investor is smart either.

Dipy.
