Anti-Democratic trend in Senate races too

Last week I wrote a column on the anti-Democratic trend in House races. Now comes a poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the Republican-supporting group American Crossroads, which indicates that a similar trend is operating in Senate races.

POS conducted 1300 interviews in 13 states with seriously contested Senate races and found that Republican candidates led Democrats, 47%-39%. Indepedents favored Republicans by a much wider margin: 47%-25%. The balance of enthusiasm also favored the GOP: those who rated their interest in the election at 8, 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale favored Republicans, 52%-36%.

The survey was conducted in five states with Republican-held seats (FL, KY, MO, NH, OH) and eight states with Democratic-held seats (AR, CO, DE, IL, IN, NV, PA, WA). Candidates’ names were used in every state but CO (whose primary is being held today); CA and WI were not polled because those races were not rated as in play by the Cook Political Report at the time the poll was being put together.

POS did not release the results in individual states because the sample size of 100 meant that the margin of error would be large and the results might be misleading.
