X-Server is a display client for an application (it is reversed as a server serves up a display and a client is the application that is being displayed) and FYI, it was so slow you could present a set of buttons in a menu and it would take 3-5 seconds to respond to a button being pushed (clicked on) even with 256MB of memory. With the K6-3/400, it responds well under 1 second (<100ms).

What are the details of this system? Is it a production system? Final OS & software?

Lots of things can hamper the performance of X-windows applications that are actually being served over a network... I wouldn't necessarily blame the architecture of the CPU. Was it X11 on Linux? Something else on some mobile Windows?

Re: video encode/decode: OMAP4 does H.264 hw decode, and they say full 1080p encode as well, though I can't pin the encode format down.

OMAP4 (using the 720MHz OMAP4430) isn't all that capable and the price is far beyond what I would be willing to pay for shitty performance and the chip is only capable of driving 2 displays (HDMI plus internal LCD):

The blaze tablet is a developers platform. It is not a consumer product, and is not priced like one.

I too think Ontario is going to be a great product. But ARM is catching up really fast in terms of raw performance, and is actually ahead (in terms of time-to-market), fusion/SOC-wise.
