Portugal is also connected to the general European grid and it can get additional power when needed from countries like France where 80% of its electric power load is being sourced by reliable, constant and relatively cheap nuclear power stations.

France provides a nice backup for the surrounding small "green power" countries when the wind doesn't blow without them having to keep expensive backup generation capacity on permanent standby.
