German quarterly GDP growth beats expectations

By Polya Lesova

FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) -- Germany's economy powered ahead in the second quarter, growing by 2.2% over the first three months of the year, the Federal Statistical Office Destatis reported on Friday. The performance was well above market expectations of 1.4% growth. "Such a quarter-on-quarter growth has never been recorded before in reunified Germany," Destatis said. Compared to the second quarter of 2009, German calendar-adjusted GDP expanded by 3.7%. The euro extended its gains after the data, trading up 0.5% to $1.2895.
