Once, having been accused of discriminatory hiring practices because of the vanishingly small number of black people in his administration, Governor Mecham said, "I am not a racist. I have black friends and I have black employees. I didn't hire the employees because they were black. I hired them because they were the best people that applied for the cotton picking job." Yep. He really said that. In his defense, it probably sounded a little better than it looks in print. Not much better, but a little. He was a real piece of work.
