I saw news reports on the death of Matthew Simmons and a number of them referred to him as a proponent of the Peak Oil "theory."

Let's get something straight. The peaking of oil production is not a "theory." It is a well observed characteristic of oil fields. To say it's a "theory" implies Simmons was a crank whose statements on Peak Oil are not grounded in reality but are just blather. It's an insult to his memory and to his courageous effort to alert people to this nascent disaster.

I believe Simmons was in fact tormented towards the end of his life by his role in the oil industry and its expansion of oil consumption by the world. Unlike many in the oil industry, Simmons had a conscience, and should be recognized for the caring man that he was.
