Arun, the glorious British DNA saved Indians from a fate worse than death. Unfortunately for India, when they took over from the British, they threw out the capitalism too, but kept the Karl Marxian and bureaucratic parts. Karl Marx wasn't actually British but did hang out there and unfortunately persuaded a good proportion of the British to the ideology too. At least India had english entrenched, though even that they foolishly tried to dump in the 1980s only to be told by the sensible young people that they needed english to get the high paying jobs. China is trying to play catch up to India with the lingua franca. China is way ahead on the capitalism black and white cat thinking. Indians keep voting themselves poor. Now, with India partitioned into Pakistan and India, with both armed with atomic bombs and superstitious ideologies, things could go from bad to worse. Being part of the British Empire had some very good points. Mqurice [ok, that's enough insomnia for me....]
