To the Thread:

In browsing though different sites on the internet this morning, I discovered there have been 2 significant changes to the SOX index since I last took a good look at the official site which defines the index. In other words, I have been "asleep at the switch" so to speak.

The first significant change is that as of today(and from now on it could possibly change rather frequently compared to the past) the index has been increased from the 21 stocks that I have been reporting on weekly to a total of 30 stocks. All of the 21 stocks I have been reporting on weekly are still included in the present 30 stocks, but 9 more have been added to the index. For a full list you can go to,

In addition to the above changes, the weighting method of the index has been changed. It used to be that the SOX was a simple price weighted index that used a "divisor" that would be constant as long as the stocks in the SOX remained unchanged, but if a stock or stocks were added or removed the divisor would be adjusted to a new number. Now there is a new weighting system. It is called "a modified capitalization-weighted index",

I haven't had time to think through all the ramifications of this change to the SOX index, but on the surface it greatly complicates the work I would have to do to keep up with the changes in the stock list. It also makes it much more difficult keep the long term tables updated.

Therefore, at least for now and the near future, I plan to report on the Group and present 21 SOX stocks as I have in the past. The only change for the moment is to use the new title of SOXM for the 21 stock group. One of the things I like to do is to compare stock prices(and a lot of other data) at different points in time, and keeping the "database" of Group and SOX stocks constant is of great benefit to me in the way that I handle the data.

At the bottom line on the tables where I show the index values, I will always use the correct SOX value. If I only use the sum of the 21 stocks in some calculation I will always identify it by the name SOXM.
