The US is generous, you just have to look to private contributions where we contribute more, not just as a total dollar figure, or even a per person dollar figure, but generally even as a percentage of income.

Perhaps people in other rich countries think they "gave at the office" with their generally higher tax rates, combined with a higher percentage (but fewer dollars) in international aid budgets.

And also there is the fact that when a country is militarily threatened we are most often the go to source for support.
