The problem with your theory that the upswing on Friday afternoon was due to the BIG guys driving up the market so they can sell into a higher market on Monday, is that the only way they "drive" the market up is by massive buying. If they are trying to liquidate to prevent catatrophe, buying stocks won't help them. Arn't they too smart for that.

As another explanation for the 3:30 - 4:00pm pop-up, how about short covering? Many traders not wanting to carry their profitable positions over a weekend.
