You forgot to tell the answer. It took me a minute to remember/think about it. And you are right, the answer is simple.

Just turn on one of the switches, wait a few minutes, then turn that switch off. Turn the next one on and go to the attic. If the light is on,
then the middle switch is the one. If off, then touch the light bulb (carefully, you don't want to get burned <g>). If warm, then the first switch must have turned the light on for the previous 5 minutes. If room temperature, then the third switch must be the one.
