Look at the automobile market. Most cars last 100,000 miles/many years, yet people generally "upgrade" every 3 - 5 years. Human nature enters into this equation. Cars are improved cosmetically and in style, but not in real value.

PCs are regularly improved in value - much better performance at lower costs. Regular upgrades will not be a problem. As someone noted here earlier, the PC has only reached a 30% market penetration (Home), so there is a lot of room for real growth.
