If it's a Seagate or Maxtor drive, you go to Seagate.com and download Seatools for Windows.

If it's another brand, just go to that manufactures website and they will have a hard drive diagnostic utility. You should not need the drives serial number, just the make, ie: Western Digital, Hitachi, Samsung, etc..

From the sounds of your problem, I don't think it's a hard drive issue. But I would run the diagnostic anyways.
