What I don't understand is the scale of the 13 story building he proposes. From what I've read his mosque now is pretty small ... even if its crowded and needs more space .... why build a 13 story building that will overlook the Ground Zero site?

Also why persist when there's so much opposition and when there are offers of alternative less controversial sites ... including the offer of the NY governor to arrange his building at another site?

I think the controversy is a way of promoting himself through controversy. As the leader of a small mosque would he be known as well internationally and have the opportunity to raise funds abroad?
