Good article....

"Westell Technologies Inc., Fore Systems and Alcatel Telecom are expected to be chosen by four regional Bell companies to provide multimegabit digital subscriber line (DSL) equipment for service rollouts next year, according to sources familiar with the pending contract.".....

"The selection sends two clear messages to users. First, the Joint Procurement Consortium made up of Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell and SBC Communications Corp. required prices to be less than $500 for equipment to support a single ADSL. This price point was a necessity, they said, to deliver monthly service fees under $50. Second, it indicates which manufacturers hold the early lead in ADSL equipment"

>>> Is there anything here we should be worried about?

Well i don't see AMTX mentioned at all!!! The only hope is that Atcatel will be using the AMTX/DMT technique standard. CAP will play an important role in the INITIAL deployment of ADSL. My quess is AMTX's solution wouldn't have been in the $500 range per line??? This seems to be the same reason that Nortel will initially use QAM.

I'am hoping that Atcatel will use AMTX's modem at the customer's end... I don't remember Atcatel having an ADSL modem for the customer. Can anyone help here???

thanks again for the URL!
